Follow your film’s care sheet

Different films have different installation and cleaning requirements. Ask your installer how long to wait before the first wash and which cleaning products suit the exact film and finish. Instructions for paint protection film do not automatically apply to every color-change vinyl.

A simple wash routine

Hand washing is the preferred approach in 3M’s care guidance. Rinse away grit, use a clean microfiber cloth and an approved mild wash product, then rinse and dry. Remove bird droppings and other contaminants promptly using the film’s recommended method; avoid scrubbing them into the surface.

Wash the film; protect the edges. Follow the product’s approved cleaning method. 1. Body panels: Work gently with a clean, soft cloth. 2. Seams + edges: Avoid lifting the film while cleaning. 3. Wheels: Use separate cleaning cloths.

Protect the edges and texture

Avoid abrasive tools and polishing waxes on matte or textured film. If using a pressure washer, follow the specific film’s limits for pressure, temperature and distance and avoid directing water into edges. Check for lifting after cleaning and contact your installer if you find damage.

Finish with a three-point walkaround. Check both sides of the actual vehicle. 1. Around handles: Look without picking at the film. 2. Panel corners: Check for lifting or new damage. 3. Wheel arches: Photograph a damaged edge for the installer.

A quick check after each wash

Walk around the car once it is dry. Look along corners, handles, mirrors and panel edges for lifting or damage. Keep abrasive cloths and strong chemicals away from the film unless the exact product instructions permit them. If a mark will not come off gently, ask the installer before escalating to a harsher treatment.

  1. Use separate clean cloths for the body and dirty wheels.
  2. Clean a small area first when trying an approved new product.
  3. Check edges without pulling at them.
  4. Photograph damage and consult the installer before applying a repair.
